Savannah tops list of best ice cream cities | News
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah is ranked No. 1 in the U.S. as the best city for ice cream.
Travel + Leisure magazine readers placed Savannah with a cherry on top. Leopold’s Ice Cream on Broughton Street in downtown Savannah scooped up a special mention. Other cities that made the list include Charleston, Minneapolis and Philadelphia.
Savannah visitors also approved of the Hostess City's national ranking.
“Every time we come to Savannah we have to have Leopold's and make sure we tell everyone. So yes, it's the best,” said Kimberley Benedict, of Orlando, FL.
“Oh, it's great. We're usually grocery store ice cream people. So this is like a notch above,” said Ellen Tedesco, of Hilton Head.
Stratton Leopold, the owner of Leopold's Ice Cream, is proud to be part of the city.
“We've been so blessed with publicity nationally and internationally it boggles our minds sometimes. But we're just so pleased, so honored. Visit Savannah does such a fantastic job promoting the city. We're just proud to be part of the city,” Leopold said.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.
